Dr Andrew Greenland

Medicine that looks for the cause, not just the label

I am a practising NHS doctor with more than 25 years of hospital experience, and a certified functional medicine practitioner. I work with people whose symptoms have never been explained, and with families facing early cognitive decline.

Two areas of work

What I focus on

I have deliberately narrowed my practice. Doing two things properly is worth more to patients than offering everything.

The Bredesen Protocol

A structured, personalised programme for people with mild cognitive impairment or early Alzheimer's disease, and for those with a family history who want to understand their risk while there is still time to act on it.

It starts with detailed testing across metabolism, inflammation, nutrition, sleep, toxic exposure and genetics, then addresses what that testing actually finds in your case.

How the protocol works

Functional medicine

For long-standing symptoms that have not been explained, or that have been managed rather than resolved. Fatigue, gut problems, recurrent infection, hormonal disruption, autoimmune conditions.

The approach integrates conventional medical assessment with functional medicine testing: work out the mechanism in your particular case, test properly, and treat what the results show rather than what the label suggests.

How I work

Why a hospital doctor

Conventionally trained, and still practising

Functional medicine attracts practitioners from many backgrounds. Mine is conventional medicine, and I have not left it. I still work at consultant level in an NHS hospital, which means I recognise serious disease, I know when a symptom needs urgent investigation rather than a supplement, and I am comfortable saying when something falls outside what I can help with.

That matters most in cognitive work, where the stakes are high and the field attracts a good deal of overstatement. I will tell you what the evidence supports, what it does not, and what is still genuinely unknown.
